By Victoria Tillson Evans, Ph.D.
As an independent educational consultant, I am constantly reading and searching for books about niche programs that can help me in my practice. Todd Johnson’s book is definitely one of the most thorough and informative texts I have bought to date. There’s no fluff, just fact, and that’s exactly what I need.
He lays out the pros and cons of participating in a B.S./M.D. early acceptance medical program, what it takes to become a strong candidate, how to work through essays, and which undergraduate institutions and medical schools in each state allow students to be accepted into M.D. programs straight from high school. Whenever the information was available, he has also provided the minimum or average academic profiles of those who were admitted, so that prospective students can easily understand what their admission chances are.
Todd Johnson does establish at the beginning of his text that he will speak only about B.S./M.D. programs that admit students into medical school straight from high school. What I would love to see him do next is expand his research and include B.S./D.O. programs (and maybe even B.S./D.D.S. programs) as well as programs where students can apply early to medical school from their undergraduate institutions after their freshman year, such as what one finds at Christopher Newport University in Virginia. That being said, for anyone interested in applying to an early acceptance medical program, this book is definitely for you!
